Garmin nüvi 1490/1490T 5-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic

Got my Garmin 1490T today and went to Garmin website to register product and download updated firmware and maps. I was stunned to find that the unit had previously been registered. It appears that Amazon is selling used merchandise as new. This is on its way back to Amazon right now.
No criticism of the Garmin product intended, obviously I never got a chance to use it. What I have an issue with is selling refurbished or returned merchandise as new. I will buy this item elsewhere.

THE SCREEN GOWS DARK WHEN PLUGGED INTO THE CAR BATTERY (CIGARETTE LIGHTER)PLACE
A HUGE DISAPOINTMENT WHEN I HAVE TO DEPEND ON A BATTERY TO GET ANYWHERE
WHATS UP WITH THAT
THE MOST EXPENSIVE PORTABLE GPS AND YOU CANT WORK IT IN THE CAR UNLESS IT IS ON BATTERY

Have been using this GPS now for about 2 months. I have to say I absolutely love it! I am a service technician so my job is traveling place to place servicing the equipment I work on. I’ve been finding different ways of getting to places that I didn’t know before. I haven’t had a problem at all with satellite signal(Garmin is the best being they use government satellites) and my route is sometimes very rural. If I happen to miss a turn, which I sometimes do on purpose, the rerouting is very quick. 99% of the places I have punched in it has found with no problem. I haven’t updated the maps yet, but I’m sure when I do it will be that much better. The volume is loud and clear. I have mine set to 50% which is plenty loud. The voice is clear and crisp, no problem understanding it. The add service is no bother at all, it only comes on when you are stopped for a period of time. I haven’t used all the features of this device yet, but I’m sure I will be quite satisfied with them. Anyone looking for a great GPS, I would highly recommend this one.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 5000 and was thinking about selling it after buying the Nuvi 1490t. After trying it out for a week and reading all the bad reviews, I think that I will return the Nuvi 1490t and keep the Nuvi 5000 for now. I like a lot of map detail and for what I can see the Nuvi 1490t is lacking in that area. Yes, Garmin could fix things with a software update, but I am still waiting for some improvements to be made to the Nuvi 5000 that never came and don’t look like it will!

It was quite easy to move to another manufacturers system. The routing to far away locations was more to my own best system. Learning curve is mostly easy and direct. It will take more long trips to see if Midpoints set the routes i like. Next trip is to Florida via Air, then Rental cars from Tampa to St. Augustine. After that to California.
